William P. Lear Sr. Hannibal MO. began flying in 1931, in 1949 established Lear INC. in Sana Monica CA. and began producing his autopilot system.  President Truman recognized Lear’s model F-5 Autopilot as one of the greatest achievements in aviation for the year 1949.   Another great achievement was his creation of the L-2 autopilot which was featured in Flying Magazine Feb 1953.  At least 21 different types of aircraft ranging from Piper to the DC-3 were utilizing Lear’s L-2 autopilot system.  This system was used in executive, professional, and military airplanes in all-weather conditions, maintaining auto-pilot course setting,  allowing the pilot to consecrate on IFR procedures, radio communications, bad weather considerations, etc.  When your aircraft reaches desired altitude,  select ALT Hold on the autopilot and that’s where you stay.  Or select ALT off to regain manual control of flight.  When making ILS landing, you select  Loc and Glide Slope, the L-2 with precision, positions your plane to the runway.

  • Feature item for this instrument panel lamp is a Lear L-2 Autopilot System, the 4 push buttons on the autopilot control create visual indications on the instrument panel.
  • Panel has three instruments which are lighted with LED eyebrow lights.
  • Press either or both LOC/Glide Slope buttons on the L-2 autopilot panel and view the ILS instrument off flags swing out of view indicating instrument locked onto the runway ILS landing system. Also, the needle swing of the instrument indicates a course correction need to fly up, fly down, fly right, or fly left depending on the toggle switch selection. You would follow the needle.
  • ALT hold button when pushed starts the autopilot to maintain present altitude. LED’s located near the ALT instrument  are to visualize a correct altitude when green and when the red LED momentarily flashes, this is to visualize altitude correction by the autopilot.  This is just for visual effect to demonstrate the system as if processing flight corrections.
  • ALT off stops the visual processing of altitude corrections, as indicating auto altitude off.
  • Pressing button next to the fuel instrument will register a needle swing, indication of fuel quantity level.
  • LED’s red and green are alternating flashing for a visual display effect.
  • Top of the instrument panel are salvaged gears from old aircraft with a LED changing colors.
  • Electrical components used within this lamp are new and were obtained from manufactures that have the UL approved endorsement.
  • Included with this lamp are two 60W Antique Vintage Edison style bulbs; any standard size medium bulb will work.
  • Located on the back side of this lamp is a variable intensity dimmer control, which adjusts the vintage style bulbs for desired light level output. This power control dimmer is also a push-on-push-off power control switch for the vintage style bulbs.
  • A separate red push button power switch operates the low powered LED lighting power supplies.

  • Rubber tip protectors are secured to the feet of this lamp to help protect the surface where it sets.
  • All Lamp surfaces are grounded for safety, all wiring is securely clamped, protected, and meets safety standards. LED power supply is safely fuzzed, switchable, and isolated from AC lamp power.
